6 Ways to Spend Time Alone; and Actually Enjoy It!


During the current pandemic, all of us have had to spend more time away from friends and family. And I don’t think I’m alone in saying that sometimes it’s really hard to spend time by yourself. It’s easy to distract yourself by being glued to your phone or staring at the TV for hours on end when you only have yourself for company. 

So whether you live alone and need to find more beneficial ways to spend your evening, or you rarely spend time alone so it’s a real challenge whenever you are by yourself, give these tips a go next time you’re solo for some more positive and productive you-time! 

  1. Get On Board With Hobbies

The main reason why many people don’t enjoy spending time alone is not their insecurities or anxieties, but simply boredom! If that's the case, then now is the time to pick up some new hobbies, and quick. It’s been proven that people who spend at least 2 hours a week on a non-competitive, purely recreational hobby are calmer and less prone to high stress levels than those without a hobby! Use this quality time to read, paint, or even knit yourself a swanky new scarf. It doesn’t matter what you choose, this is your time to try new things, without any distractions! 

  1. Be Your Own Source Of Validation

Sure, it feels great to get constant texts, and to have plans all the time. But take a second and ask yourself why you crave this 24/7 attention. Could it be you don't know how to give yourself validation? When was the last time you gave yourself a compliment? Stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye and tell yourself all the wonderful things that you would love to hear from other people. Tune in to yourself and the qualities you think are great! You'll soon realise you don't really need anybody else but yourself.

  1. Join an online community 

Whilst spending all your free time online isn’t recommended, there are still so many positive and beneficial ways to use social media. In the words of Ru Paul, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?!” It’s easy to distract yourself from thinking about where you are in life and the relationships you have, when you don’t have anyone to regularly spend time with. However it’s impossible to have strong, honest and loving relationships with your friends, family or romantic connections if you don’t have a strong, honest and loving relationship with yourself! So use your valuable alone time to think about your relationship with yourself and how this affects the way you present yourself to others. Strong relationships with others start from the foundations within you! And remember there is ALWAYS someone out there who cares about you.

  1. Use The Time To Your Advantage

OK, so housework might not be at the top of your "fun things to do" list, but a weekend alone is an excellent opportunity to get sh*t done. Turn on some music, throw your comfy clothes on, and get to cleaning. In a few hours, your place will look amazing and you’ll enjoy relaxing in your sparkly clean surroundings much more! 

  1. Enjoy The Ultimate Relaxation

While there's nothing wrong with running around and doing things for others, sometimes it’s just necessary to cancel your plans, stay at home, and really pamper yourself. The moment you climb in to that hot bubble bath with some relaxing music playing will be the moment you forget why you ever hated spending time alone.
